Last week I was tidying up my crafty space so that my mum can use my main working desk for her sewing (easier to cut out patterns and whatnot from the standing desk) and I started playing with my little letter board (bargain buy from Kmart) - they are such a fun little thing! As I was searching for a new message to put on it, I decided I wanted to get another one but in something other than black. Now I love the store brought ones, but I didn't feel like spending $50-$75 bucks on a letter board "just because". So off to Pinterest I went!
Have I mentioned I love Pinterest before? I'm sure I have. I love it. I can "waste" hours clicking from one pin to the next. And you can bet there are plenty of posts on making your own Letter Board. I found this one that looked super easy, realised I already had everything but the sheets of coloured felt (so off to the shops I went to buy more felt) and made it!
And wouldn't you know - it actually worked!
It's far from perfect and I can only use the bigger letters (the little suckers fall out) BUT YAY!
The instructions from Jolly and Happy are super easy to follow so I won't write up a blog post but I did snap some photo's while making it so figured I'd share them here.
And then I stopped taking photo's after the first colour was done, lol. Sorry!
The only step I changed as I went on was how I glued the felt to the rods - instead of running it along the felt strip (as per the photo above) and then sticking the rod down I ended up just wrapping the felt around the rod first and using glue at the top to stick it down only - I got a much smoother finish (glue got a little clunky on some of them so they weren't smooth/round on the faces which means the letters wont sit on them properly).
Originally I just wanted the whole thing hot pink but as I went on I realised I wouldn't have enough sheets of the same colour so I switched it to ombré look instead. Kinda fun little spin on it.
As I said, my finished board is far from perfect but I had almost all the materials already (just had to spend $10 on felt sheets!) so compared to buying a new new one - this is a bargain ;)
It's a nice pop of colour on the desk. Although mum took one look and said "Why didn't you go with yellow?!". Hmmmm.....why didn't I?!!! Next one will be yellow ;) (Excuse the drink on the LHS of the desk there...you'd have thought I'd know to remove it before taking photo's...)
And here's my other one from Kmart - I'm not so great at the witty messages on the boards but I like 'em anyway!
Not exactly one of my standard scrappy related post but I'm trying to mix it up a little this year so I don't get so boring for you ;)
Do you use Pinterest?! Just for inspiration or you like to try out the odd DIY project too? I'm a sucker for those little crafty DIY projects, I'm not great at any of it but I like to give it a shot. And I get super excited when I have half the stuff I need to do them in my stash already lol. It's nuts how many random things I buy because I think one day I'll use it.
As always, thanks so much for stopping by, I really do appreciate it. Have a super weekend! Take care, Em xo
